How well do they play?: Mallow is small, quick, clever, and adept at evasive manuevers. That said, he isn't strong and his aim is nothing to write home about, so the trick will definitely be more about hitting him than avoiding being hit by him. While he might not show it, he likes games and he does want to stay in as long as he can.
How do they use their magic?: Mallow may use his magic to restrain a particularly aggressive or evasive player with vines or even put them to sleep. He may also attempt to distract other players with floating orbs of light or illusory sounds. Turning into a tiny bat is a last resort, but not out of the question.
Who are they gunning for?: Nobody in particular.
Who would they take a hit for?: Anybody that seems particularly upset at the prospect of being hit could end up getting him to fall on his sword for them, unfortunately. He's a soft touch.
