a powerful being who enters a pact with you, granting you magical ability (and possibly more) in exchange for your servitude. this could be something as simple as pledging to use your powers for good in alignment with your patron's ideals. or, in the case of devils, you may be given tasks to use your newfound powers to bolster their own position within the fiendish hierarchy.
