Midnight Masquerade
MIDNIGHT MASQUERADE
The Halloween Masquerade is being held tonight in Grandloft Hall, the main classroom building for Silverquill Campus. Evocative of a luxurious train station that doubles as a theater, Grandloft is a vast space with shafts of light streaking in from the enchanted windowpanes far above. Grandloft teems with balconies, loges, booths, daises, and other spaces where orators can perform their craft. Inklings, the college’s mascots, flit around the high ceiling, and enchanted spotlights automatically focus on any mage who uses powerful magic.
Hosted by the Silverquill professors, this party is a little tamer than the Rush Week party. Mallow shows up a few hours early to help set up, earning a little good will from the usually steely Dean Lu. He confides in them that while he used to enjoy parties, he hasn't been much for revelry since his late wife died ten years ago. Meanwhile, Dean Talonrook flags down an unsuspecting [Volunteer B] outside the library and asks them to help her carry several heavy boxes of decorations all the way to Silverquill campus.
For the event, the entire space has been decked out in crystals and finery, the color palette of the event being autumnal oranges and golds. Pumpkins, gourds, and cornucopias adorn the tables, some now gilded or crystalline. The Inklings have been instructed to spook anyone who wanders off alone, and are taking great joy in jumpscaring students. [Volunteer C] drops a crystal goblet full of punch when a bat-shaped Inkling leaps out of the punchbowl at them.
At midnight, there's a fireworks display outside, and a ripple of magic goes over everything. Gone is the glimmering glamour of the early evening, replaced now by dense fog in ominous greens and purples, cobwebs and shifting shadows. The sweeping orchestral waltzes are also replaced by more modern dance music, giving the students a chance to do some more casual partying before the party ends around two in the morning.

RUMORS
This morning, a fresh edition of the Strixhaven Star dropped, rumor column and all. Not all of these rumors are necessarily true! If you take a volunteer slot, you're free to either have that be true or just a rumor.
Felisa Fang and Zanther Bowen have been getting cozy after Mage Tower Cheer Squad practice.
[Volunteer D] doesn't return money after borrowing it. Don't lend to them!
Iris Maxentius was spotted lurking around Lorehold and Quandrix campus. What's she up to?
They might be engaged, but Velvet Vespertine and Adrian Flyte are in an open relationship.
It's early in the year, but Czernobog Anger is a contender for freshmen class valedictorian already.
Quentillius Melentor has declared Lunulata his freshman nemesis and is plotting his downfall.
Helmine Blackwater is completely obsessed with Killian Lu.
Ashling Luperca bit somebody in the cafeteria. Hope they don't catch lycanthropy!
Nora Ann Wu rejected Grayson Wildemere's invitation to the Halloween Masquerade. It was awkward!
Arlo Snapdragon has a crush on [Volunteer G], but they're too shy to say anything about it.
Rosie Wuzfeddlims is brewing some kind of bootleg moonshine in the Lorehold seniors' basement.
Ambrosius Voldaren has been tapped by a group of Elite Adventurers in Faerûn to join after he graduates.
LOCATIONS
For arrivals, outfits, and general attitudes.
Grandloft's open floorplan leaves enough room for dramatic waltzes.
There's plenty to eat, and Javenesh Stoutclaw is working the bar serving cocktails (and mocktails, for those who don't want to drink).
Just before midnight, step out onto the patio to watch a fireworks display. Inside, the decorations shift from glittering to spooky.
These short scenes between NPCs can each be overheard by one freshman student. Just reply to the scene you want your character to have observed!
If your character wants to explore anything in particular or talk to an NPC I haven't made a post for, go ahead and leave a comment here.
